It was built between 1704-1755 on the site where formerly a Gothic church from the 13th century stood, which was also dedicated to Saint Nicholas. It has been described as the greatest example of Prague Baroque.

Positioned on a roundabout known as Bird Island, the twenty-eight foot high sculpture, constructed of mild steel, was created by Polish sculptor Walenty Pytel in 1985, to commemorate 40 years of peace in Europe. Pytel is widely regarded as one of the world's leading metal sculptors.
